Sainkho Namtchylak: Let the sunshine

Here is a song, typical of the ethno-pop style of Sainkho Namtchylak, a famous throat singer from Siberia.
Sainkho Namtchylak was born in a small village of the Republic of Tuva, in southern Siberia. Tuva is famous for its diphonic style of singing, the "khöömei", of shamanic origin. Throat singers use their voices to create the sounds of the natural world. The sounds of whistling birds, bubbling streams, howling wolves and blowing wind are often incorporated into the music. Because the horse is such an integral part of Tuvan culture, many songs are performed to a rhythm that mimics the beat of a horse cantering across the wild, open land. The music also is closely tied to Tuvan spiritual beliefs.
Sainkho Namtchylak began her career as a folk singer and toured in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada. In 1988, she joined the group Tri-O, a group of creative jazz and became famous in the West. Her record Out of Tuva, made between 1989 and 1993 in Kyzyl, Moscow, Paris and Brussels, is considered as a masterpiece of ethno-pop music. She has sung with singers from Algeria, Spain, Peru... She sings in Russian, English and her mother tongue, Tuvan. She has made 28 albums and won 3 international prizes. Sainkho Namtchylak has experienced all kind of music, from classical to jazz and ethnic.
Enjoy this strange but fascinating way of singing!
