Recitations of epics date from the 17th century and owe their name to the province of Satsuma (northern Japan), as well as to the pear-shaped lute biwa. This extract tells of one of the numerous battle episodes between the Heike and Genji clans during the 12th century. Kinshi Tsuruta (1911-1995) is the most famous of such performers. She has a particularly deep voice: she sings in the chest register, whilst switching to head voice to execute the ornaments.
Enjoy her artistry and the beauty of Japanese culture and art!
