Kinshi Tsuruta: Epic recitation of the genre Satsuma-Biwa
Recitations of epics date from the 17th century and owe their name to the province of Satsuma (northern Japan), as well as to the pear-shaped lute biwa. This extract tells of one of the numerous battle episodes between the Heike and Genji clans during the 12th century. Kinshi Tsuruta is the most famous of such performers. She has a particularly deep voice: she sings in the chest register, whilst switching to head voice to execute the ornaments.
